The CoreStates Center buzzed with rumors about who would be in attendance for last night's Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals and who looked like celebrities. (Ever think about how Detroit Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman looks like Squiggy from the Laverne & Shirley television series?)

``I saw Renee Chenault,'' screamed one young Flyers fan rising on the escalator.

Houston Rockets bad boy Charles Barkley was supposed to be here, but there were no reports of kids being spat upon. Business magnate Donald Trump, in attendance during Game 3 at Madison Square Garden, was expected but had not arrived by the start of the game. Boyz II Men were reportedly sighted in a suite, but former Flyer and broadcaster Gary Dornhoefer was in that room, munching on pretzels, and reported no snap or doo-wops there.

Story continues below.

Gov. Ridge, Mayor Rendell and State Sen. Frank A. Salvatore (R., Phila.) all hosted politicos and friends during the game, while athletes and ex-athletes and the neckless but muscular wonders tramped through the aisles of exclusive skyboxes and prized seats said to be scalping material for as much as $1,000.

Boston Bruins great Bobby Orr and former Flyers winger Mark Howe - now a Detroit hockey scout - cruised the stands before the game.

``Somebody came up to me in the parking lot before the game and told me that I don't have to change allegiance now that I've gone to Detroit,'' Howe said. ``But I'm rooting for Detroit.''

Sightings. South Philly singing legend Bobby Rydell orbited the ice, while Bonnie Lindros, in a black pantsuit, took her seat in the stands. Eagles defensive end Mike Mamula, preparing for Eagles training camp, which begins tomorrow at the Vet, stretched out in the Herr's and TastyKake suite, which held executives from both snack-food companies as well as from the Wawa and Genuardi's supermarkets.

``How do you think Mike got so big?'' joked TastyKake national manager George Price.

``I love the game,'' said Mamula, making no comment about his snack consumption. ``I've come before and really hope the Flyers pull it off.''

Mamula pranced through the halls, passing Super Bowler Matt Millen, an equally sculpted athlete. They didn't stop to compare biceps.
