Just A Day At The Beach `Event-friendly' Wildwoods To Help Usher In Nfl Season

Stone Harbor Mayor Susan Walters saw too many problems in the NFL's proposal to host a giant Labor Day weekend beach party and touch football game on her New Jersey shore town's beaches.

Beach erosion, lack of lifeguards, beach-tag checkers and a general decrease in summer employees were on that list. Not to mention grumbling from the town's more conservative residents about public beer guzzling.

So Walters and Stone Harbor passed on the opportunity to host the first-ever ``NFL Kickoff Weekend Beach Party.'' Avalon, Stone Harbor's neighbor, did, too, for some of the same concerns.

But not Wildwood. In fact, Wildwood, known by local teens in two states as the place to celebrate Senior Week, has almost never shied away from a good party.

Or a chance to market itself. Remember, this town sent its mayor to Canada in 1982 to try to win back Ontario vacationers during a decline in the tourist population.

This place also welcomes beer on the beach, if done properly, of course.

What all this means is that Wildwood will be both the best place to get into the swing of the beginning of football season and the worst place for shore traffic, with thousands of football fans expected to jam the glitzy boardwalk community.

Including Walters.

``I'm going over to get a firsthand look and see what's going on,'' she said.

Beginning tomorrow, the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority will begin hosting the NFL's beach party.

NFL spokesman Chris Widmaier said the event is an attempt to focus additional attention on the NFL's opening weekend, and, if successful, could be expanded to other areas next year.

``We're always investigating or exploring new ways to generate excitement over the opening of the season,'' Widmaier said. ``One of the things that brings us to Philadelphia and southern Jersey is the Eagles open on the road against the Giants, a big division rival. And we know how important that last summer holiday is for Philadelphia and Eagles fans. We said let's bring the game to the beach.

``We do a lot of different things to pump up interest, and this is one of them,'' Widmaier said. ``If this works the way we believe it will, there is no reason why we can't do this next year on Long Island or Southern California or anywhere.''
