Hearl To Coach Falcons

Posted: October 23, 1998

Mary Hearl, an assistant coach at Burlington Township, has been named the girls' basketball head coach at the school.

Hearl replaces Marliese Filbert, who resigned after last season. Hearl's appointment became official during Wednesday's school board meeting.

``I'm very excited to get the job,'' Hearl, 24, said. ``I've been working with Marliese closely and have watched the program take off.''

Hearl, who attended Riverside, is familiar with the Freedom Division. She is a 1996 graduate of Ursinus College, where she was captain of the basketball team in her senior year. Last season, she was a volunteer assistant for the Falcons.

Filbert, who coached for six years at Burlington Township, helped turn the program around, guiding the Falcons to the 1997 state Group 1 title and to a Burlington County League Freedom Division championship in each of the last two years.

Also at the school board meeting, James Mills was appointed Township's athletic director. Mills, who has worked for the last 16 years as a guidance counselor, replaced Tim Hadden, who recently was named curriculum supervisor of social studies, related arts, and health and physical education.

Holy Cross names coach. Tom Gowan has been hired as girls' basketball coach at Holy Cross. Gowan replaces Todd Lehmann, who coached the Lancers for the last two years. Lehmann has accepted a position as an assistant for the Rowan men's team.

Gowan was the Lancers' head girls' coach for seven seasons in the 1980s.
