Three major sales next week will offer opportunities to bid on paintings by members of the women's art group known as the Philadelphia Ten; more pictures and prints by and reminiscent of Wallace Nutting; and a rare 16th-century Atlas with a chilling provenance.

The paintings by members of the Philadelphia Ten will be sold as part of the March catalog sale of the Alderfer Auction Co. beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Alderfer Auction Center in Hatfield. They include works by Isabel Parke Branson Cartwright, Constance Cochrane, Arrah Lee Gaul, Edith Lucile Howard, and two by Fern Isabel Coppedge, notably The Delaware in Winter. It graces the cover of the $10 color-illustrated catalog.

Many other paintings are by local artists including Walter Baum, Christopher Shearer, Harry Leith Ross, John Folinsbee, Antonio Martino and Amos Shontz.

Other items in the sale include English, French and country furniture art pottery and silver.

In addition, at 5 p.m. Wednesday Alderfer will conduct a gallery art auction featuring 250 works by lesser known artists. Inspection for both sales begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the center, 501 Fairgrounds Rd., just off the Lansdale exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast extension. For further information, call 215-393-3000.

Wallace Nutting sale. The Wallace Nutting objects will be offered by Michael Ivankovich at a two-day sale next weekend at the Sheraton Inn-Jetport in Allentown.

The first session, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, will feature popular early 20th-century prints, including 35 by Maxfield Parrish, other prints by Currier and Ives, Charles Dana Gibson and Wallace Nutting imitations.

Next Saturday's session, beginning at 9 a.m., will be devoted to Nutting himself. It will begin with 15 pieces of Nutting furniture.

That will be followed by 10 Pennsylvania pictures and that by dozens of prints, including a rare version of Light on a Dark Subject. A similar one recently sold for more than $600.

Inspection is 3 to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the sale site, directly across from the Lehigh Valley International Airport. For further information call 215-345-6094.

Incidentally, Ivankovich has come out with a new book, The Collector's Value Guide to Early 20th Century American Prints, that lists representative works by the era's best known artists, thumbnail sketches of the artists, tips on their work and typical prices. It is published by Collector Books of Paducah, Ky.
