George H. Ortlip 3d, 65, a retired high school athletic director who had stressed academics and discipline, died Saturday of heart-related problems at his home in East Norriton Township.

He retired in 1996 as athletic director for the Norristown Area School District, a post he had held since 1981.

Mr. Ortlip began with the district as a mathematics and geography teacher at East Norriton Junior High School in 1956, and in 1973 was named activities director for the district's three middle schools.

Although known for his emphasis on discipline and achievement in academics, he also "touched the lives of many with his quick wit and especially his great sense of humor," said a daughter, Sondra Stoczko.

Besides his school duties, he was a photographer for more than 20 years, specializing in wedding photos. In retirement, he spent time gardening, woodworking and working with his computer.

Mr. Ortlip was born in East Norriton and resided his entire life in the Norristown area. He graduated from Norristown High School in 1952 and from Millersville (Pa.) State College in 1956, and later took graduate courses at Temple University.

Besides his daughter Sondra, he is survived by his wife of many years, Corinne Johnson Ortlip; children, Lisa Cornish, Rebecca Barlow and Robert P. Sr.; and 13 grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Boyd-Horrox Funeral Home, 200 W. Germantown Pike (Route 422), East Norriton. A service will be held at noon tomorrow at the funeral home. Burial will be in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, 352 S. Gulph Rd., King of Prussia.

The family suggests contributions to George H. Ortlip 3d Scholar/Athletic Memorial Fund, c/o Prudential Securities, 310 Old York Rd., Jenkintown, Pa. 19046.
