Enrollment In Night School Drops For Technical District

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP — While the strong job market is a plus for most, it has made things difficult for the Camden County Technical School District's night-school program.

Enrollment in the postsecondary Technical Institute Program is 914 students, down 163 from the previous school year. School officials attributed a large portion of the drop to the booming economy.

"The general economy is now so good that people are not looking to get the job training they want when the market is depressed," said R. Sanders Haldeman, district superintendent.

The institute provides training in areas such as business technology, industrial trades and allied health at campuses here and in Pennsauken. Haldeman said he expected enrollment to go back up when the job market changed.

He also attributed part of the drop to the district's decision to start charging tuition in 1997-98. The previous year, enrollment was about 1,750. Most students now pay about $600 per course.

Overall district enrollment decreased by 181 students to 2,865 since last year.

Pennsauken High School was the only division where enrollment rose, from 649 to 668. Gloucester Township High School and the special-needs unit at both schools experienced minor decreases.
