Tatsuo Tazumi, 72, A Phila. Pharmacist

Tatsuo "Tats" Tazumi, 72, a Philadelphia pharmacist for 44 years, died of lung cancer Friday at his Bellmawr home.

He had lived in Bellmawr for 39 years. He was born in Salinas, Calif., but in 1942 he and his Japanese-American family were forced to move to a government relocation center in Poston, Ariz. In 1944, he moved to Philadelphia and stayed with his sister, who was working for the American Friends Service Committee.

While working as a domestic, he continued his education and graduated in 1946 from Germantown High School, where he was a captain of the basketball team, said Teruko "Terrie" Oye Tazumi, his wife of 46 years.

After graduation, Mr. Tazumi enlisted in the Army, serving until late 1947. He then worked for a time at Seabrook Farms in Cumberland County before enrolling in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, from which he graduated in 1953.

Mr. Tazumi worked at Libros Apothecary in the Medical Tower Building on 17th Street in Center City and became a co-owner in 1960. He and his partner moved the business to the nearby Warwick Hotel in 1988, then sold the pharmacy in 1995. Mr. Tazumi then returned to work at the pharmacy at the original Medical Tower Building site until becoming ill in 1997.

He was a member of the Seabrook Buddhist Temple in Upper Deerfield Township, Cumberland County.

A golfer, he particularly enjoyed playing at the Centerton Country Club and at the Kresson Country Club in Cherry Hill.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Tazumi is survived by a son, Steven K.; a daughter, Lisa M.; five grandchildren; a brother and a sister.

Friends may visit after 10 a.m. today at the Seabrook Buddhist Temple, Northville Road, Upper Deerfield, where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow at the Laurel Lawn Crematory in Upper Deerfield. Inurnment will be in Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton.
