Reports: Tulsa's Self To Coach Illinois

June 09, 2000|Daily News Wire Services

Tulsa coach Bill Self traveled to Illinois last night to meet with school officials about their vacant basketball coaching job after hurriedly meeting with his players and telling colleagues the discussions were serious.

ESPN.com, quoting an unidentified source close to Self, reported he would become the Illini coach as early as today. The Champaign News-Gazette also reported Self will be given the job.

Illinois officials would not confirm reports of Self being hired.

Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther called Tulsa yesterday seeking permission to talk to Self about the job, less than 24 hours after Oklahoma's Kelvin Sampson turned it down.

Story continues below.

Self could not be reached for comment.

Under Self, Tulsa went 32-5 last season and reached the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. In his three seasons there the Golden Hurricane were 74-27.
