Knicks Acquire Forward Othella Harrington

In a trade that adds size and depth to their frontcourt, the New York Knicks acquired power forward Othella Harrington from the Vancouver Grizzlies yesterday for guard Erick Strickland and two draft picks.

Harrington, the starting power forward for the Grizzlies for the last 1 1/2 seasons, averages 10.9 points and 6.6 rebounds. He will give the Knicks another big body to back up starters Larry Johnson and Marcus Camby.

* Portland Trail Blazers forward Scottie Pippen will be sidelined indefinitely after surgery Monday to remove a bone fragment in his right elbow.

* Phoenix guard Jason Kidd met with NBA officials in New York to talk about his arrest on a charge of assaulting his wife. Suns owner Jerry Colangelo called the meeting routine and said no league action was anticipated.

* Shaquille O'Neal underwent treatment for his sore right foot again while the Los Angeles Lakers held a light workout at Gund Arena in Cleveland without him.

COLLEGES

The Oklahoma State men's basketball team practiced for the first time since two players and eight others from the team's traveling party were killed Saturday in a plane crash.

A public memorial service was planned for today for the victims.

The Cowboys' game against Texas Tech, scheduled for last night, has been postponed indefinitely.

OSU will return to the court Saturday for a home game against Missouri.

* Maryland officials apologized to a Duke player's mother, who suffered a concussion after being hit by bottles allegedly thrown by a Terrapins fan.

Renee Boozer, mother of Duke center Carlos Boozer, was hit in the head with a glass-and-plastic bottle after Duke's 98-96 overtime win Saturday.

* Stony Brook and the State University of New York at Albany will join the America East next season.

Towson, Drexel, Hofstra and Delaware said in December they are leaving for the Colonial Athletic Association for the 2002-03 season. The America East would have 12 teams for the 2001-02 season, then drop to eight.

BASEBALL

The commissioner's office voided the contracts of a pair of Dominican players, Jose Ramon Canela Marte and Junior Alexander Felix Medina, because they used false birth certificates, and said major-league teams can't sign them before July 1.
