Letters Victim victimized again

March 22, 2001

What value is there in further victimizing the victim? The photo (March 19) of Sylvia Abdul-Haqq's lifeless body hanging out of the trunk of a car is in such poor taste I regret having purchased the paper.

Just remember: There but for the Grace of God. . .

Sylvia Abdul-Haqq, murdered by her husband, was a lovely, intelligent, gracious professional woman, loved and respected.

To print that shocking picture is insufferable. There is just no excuse for this blatant sensationalism. You have subjected this family to added horror.

Story continues below.

MARGARET CAPPS NEWMAN, Philadelphia

Why publish the photo of Sylvia Abdul-Haqq's legs hanging out of the car? With recent injuries and deaths of women by men who claim to love them, from the Collins case to this one, it is a grave injustice to the family. Have more respect for the deceased. AJAY JONES, Philadelphia

Where is your sympathy and compassion for the family of a murdered couple? What about the victims' children who have to go to school and face their peers?

The picture was in very bad taste - very humiliating to family members and friends. I'll stop my husband from buying the Daily News; you lack compassion and sensitivity.

WENDY RICE, Philadelphia

How could the Daily News be so insensitive to the families of the victims killed Sunday morning? I could not believe my eyes when I saw the picture of the woman's feet hanging out of the trunk of the car. I am appalled at your lack of compassion.

JEANETTE CRATIC, Philadelphia

Actually visited school

Thanks to Dan Geringer for his recent column about George Washington High School. He took the time to actually walk through the building and talk to students. It's disappointing that so many of his colleagues have based articles on opinion, not experience.

A lot of good things are going on. Unfortunately, we usually get to read only the sensationalistic stuff, blown out of proportion. Any organization can be picked apart under a microscope and made to look worse than it is.

Plumbers maligned

Dave Davies' article on plumbing inspectors taking bribes contains a line that is untrue: "So they share a common background, and they drink at the union halls." This wrongly portrays all union tradesmen as drunks. We are hard-working honest people earning a paycheck from week to week. We perform quality work, finishing each job with pride, not knowing whether another job is waiting for us.
