Sampras advances in L.A. tournament

Pete Sampras struggled in his first match since Wimbledon, but raised his game to eliminate Chris Woodruff, 7-5, 6-2, last night in the Mercedes Benz Cup in Los Angeles.

Sampras needed 77 minutes and delivered 12 aces to one for Woodruff in the first-round match.

Sampras will face defending champion Michael Chang tonight.

Kristina Brandi and Meilen Tu were among the opening-round winners at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif. Brandi beat Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada, 6-4, 6-3, while Tu outlasted Laura Granville, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Top-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia was beaten in the first round of the Idea Prokom Open in Sopot, Poland, losing, 7-6 (3), 6-4, to Federico Luzzi of Italy.

Hockey

Right wing Sandy McCarthy has re-signed with the New York Rangers. McCarthy, a former Flyer, had 11 goals, 10 assists and 171 penalty minutes in 81 games last season, when he earned $880,000. Terms of the new contract were not disclosed.

Elsewhere: The Buffalo Sabres signed defenseman Doug Janik, a second-round pick in the 1999 NHL entry draft. Janik spent the last three seasons at the University of Maine. . . . Goaltender Patrick Lalime and left wing Magnus Arvedson have re-signed with the Ottawa Senators. . . . The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Ian Moran to a two-year, $1.5 million deal. . . . The Colorado Avalanche signed free-agent defenseman Todd Gill, who has played 17 NHL seasons, most recently with the Detroit Red Wings.

Golf

James Vargas of Miami and Scotty Campbell of Conway, Ark., each shot record-tying 6-under-par 65s to share the lead after the opening round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.

Their scores tied the 18-hole record for the Junior Amateur set by J.C. Deacon in 1999 at the Country Club of York, Pa.

Vargas, 17, shot a 30 on the back nine, breaking a 49-year record for the lowest score in nine holes by 1 stroke. He had four of his six birdies and an eagle on the back nine.

Vargas tied the all-time qualifying mark for the Junior Amateur with Jack Nicklaus and Travis Whisman.

Christina Kim, a 17-year-old from San Jose, Calif., shot an 8-under par 62 at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship for the lowest 18-hole score in USGA championship history.
