Letters Two Views From Muslim Philadelphia

Posted: October 12, 2001

THIS IS AN open letter to the Muslims in Philly who also happen to be African-American:

Now that Islam is in the news every day, why don't we make in extra effort to help promote it in the correct light? To my brothers in Islam: come in off the corners, put the weed and crack down, get rid of the guns, clean yourselves up. Stay out of the clubs, stop the fornicating, stop chasing skirts, find the Muslim wives. Get to the masjid for the salat, turn down Jay-Z and listen to the imams on tape.

To my sisters, get rid of the tight jeans, put the overgarment on, stay out of the clubs, stop looking for the next man to get, find a husband, be a good wife, a good mother, a sister.

We all know at least one Muslim who indulges in one of these vices - and it's sad. This our chance to look at ourselves and ask: Am I helping the cause of Islam or am I aiding in the destruction of Islam. Please, let's get it together.
