The owner of a check-cashing company in West Oak Lane was fatally shot during a robbery attempt yesterday morning, authorities said. His death comes 10 years after his father was shot and killed during a robbery at a family-owned check-cashing business in Hunting Park.

Father and son were both pronounced dead at the same hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday, Mark Canino, 45, of Wyncote, was walking from his vehicle to Discount Check Cashing Agency at 6301 Stenton Ave. when he was confronted by two robbers who demanded cash.

Canino was shot once in the lower right abdomen. Before he collapsed, he was able to fire five rounds from his .38-caliber revolver, seriously wounding one of his attackers. He was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.

Police said they recovered Canino's gun, a blood-soaked towel, and a backpack containing $30,000 in cash that he had been carrying.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., a man fitting the description of one of the robbers entered Moss Rehabilitation Center and was taken to Albert Einstein for treatment to a gunshot wound to the left side of his abdomen. He remained in serious condition last night.

Police said the wounded man, Jesse Wade, 38, whose address was not available, would be charged in the robbery.

In June 1991, three robbers shot Canino's father, Christopher Canino, 55, twice in the chest at close range as he entered Discount Cash Checking Agency at 4244 N. Broad St. The robbers escaped but left behind $4,000 Christopher Canino had hidden in his shirt.
