John Cameron Mitchell's gender-bending, neo-Ziggy Stardust creation Hedwig and the Angry Inch will get a much-deserved encore performance as part of the "Movie Monday" series on Monday night at the Balcony at the Troc.
Created as a one-man Off-Broadway performance piece, Hedwig blossomed from there to become a hit show and a film - directed by Mitchell himself and released in theaters in 2001. With some smart songs and a melancholy, absurdist humor, the pic - about a would-be rock star's botched sex-change operation and his/her struggle to win over chain-restaurant patrons on a U.S. "tour" - landed on a goodly number of year-end best-of lists. It's an engaging, rocking little piece.
