A happy boy, learning quickly

Posted: January 21, 2002

Kenneth, 10, enjoys being around adults and will happily go along with whatever activity they plan.

His teacher says Kenneth can learn quickly when he is motivated and pays attention. He does best in spelling, and struggles with math problems.

He's in special-education classes, on a fourth-grade level, for children with learning disabilities. Medication is given for an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and impulse control.

Indoors, he likes drawing and coloring, eating pizza, and playing computer and video games. Outside he shoots baskets, rides a bike, runs and swims.

There are abuse and neglect in his background, and he receives therapy.

Though he is generally in good health, Kenneth has a history of asthma; problems can be triggered by animals and cigarette smoke.

A patient and nurturing two-parent family, without younger children, is being sought for Kenneth. His heritage is African American and Caucasian. He is eligible for financial subsidy.

This child and others are available for adoption by approved applicants. The process usually takes two to 12 months. For information, write to the National Adoption Center, 1500 Walnut St., Philadelphia 19102, call 215-735-9988, or visit the Web site at http://www.adopt.org.
