Grammy stars to get a bagful of goodies

February 19, 2002|By Gayle Ronan Sims INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The megawatt stars taking the stage at next week's Grammy Awards are each getting a grab bag with $16,000 worth of freebie loot. The party favors, for performers such as Janet Jackson, 'N Sync and Britney Spears, include $1,900 diamond earrings, $4,500 Sports Club/LA membership, pagers, iPod music players, and a two-night stay at the Ian Schrager hotel of their choice, the New York Post says. There is one "practical" item included - a personalized bust of each performer, in bronze or aluminum. Each bag contains a pair of diamond earrings and a body item, such as deodorant and mints. Some starlets are getting extra-preferred status - among them No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani, who is set to wed Gavin Rossdale and is getting $5,000 in dinnerware. (As if they needed it.) The show airs at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 on CBS.

Brueghel painting stolen

A painting by the Flemish master Jan Brueghel was stolen from an antiques fair in Stockholm on Sunday, police said. The painting, A View Over Alost, is estimated by art experts to be worth $2.5 million. The thief had apparently hidden on the premises overnight and took off with the Brueghel and four other paintings, all of which were insured, in daylight after the fair opened. Police did not catch him.

The theft is the second in Stockholm involving famous works of art in just over a year. In December 2000, armed robbers stole paintings by Rembrandt and Renoir from a museum. Nine people have been sentenced to prison for that theft, but two of the paintings are still missing.

It's a match

Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees and his longtime steady, pop singer Jessica Simpson, are officially engaged, a publicist confirmed.

During a joint interview on CBS's Early Show two years ago, Lachey said, "The first time I ever heard her sing, I got chills. . . . I told the guys . . . 'I'm going to marry that girl one day.' " He says he has remained faithful to his 21-year-old fiancee. She has proclaimed that she's holding onto her virginity until she gets married. No wedding date has been set.

Mexican diva gives birth

Disgraced pop queen Gloria Trevi, who was often called Mexico's Madonna, gave birth to a boy yesterday in police custody at a hospital in Brazil, where she is battling extradition to Mexico on sex-abuse charges. The birth of Trevi's baby, conceived in a Brazilian jail where conjugal visits were banned, is part of the saga that has intrigued the region since she was arrested in Rio de Janeiro in January 2000.
