SAN DIEGO — San Diego's Julie Foudy scored the only goal of the game and the first of her WUSA career as the Spirit beat the Charge, 1-0, last night at Torero Stadium.

The loss ended at four games the season-opening winning streak for the Charge (4-1-0). They were shut out for the first time since July 7, a streak of 12 consecutive regular-season games.

The run had been a record for the WUSA, which was launched last year. The Charge still remain one point ahead of the Carolina Courage for first place in the WUSA standings.

San Diego (2-2-2) earned its first win over the Charge after two losses and a tie.

Charge captain Kelly Smith was held pointless, ending her league record at seven games. Entering the game, the team had outscored opponents by 11-4.

The Charge's next game is at Carolina on Saturday.

Philadelphia played the game without defender Erica Iverson, who was serving a one-game suspension for receiving two yellow cards in the Charge's May 11 win over the Washington Freedom.
