Righthander Jose Rijo was placed on the 15-day disabled list last night, giving the Cincinnati Reds room for newly acquired third baseman Russell Branyan.

The Reds got Branyan from the Cleveland Indians earlier yesterday in a trade for minor-league first baseman Ben Broussard.

The Orioles placed righthander Calvin Maduro on the 15-day DL yesterday and activated pitcher Jason Johnson, who will start today against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Maduro, a former Phillie, has a fractured bone spur and bone chips in his right elbow.

The Texas Rangers activated all-star catcher Ivan Rodriguez for the start of their interleague series against the Atlanta Braves last night. Rodriguez has been out since April 15 with a herniated disc in his back.

Charles Nagy was placed on the 15-day DL yesterday by the Indians. Nagy is suffering from an injured right elbow.

The Toronto Blue Jays signed first-round draft pick Russ Adams. Adams, selected 14th overall, hit .370 with seven home runs and 55 RBIs in 63 games with the North Carolina Tar Heels this past season. Terms were not disclosed.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Nick Bierbrodt was shot and wounded yesterday while sitting in a taxi waiting in a drive-through line at a fast food restaurant.

The lefthanded pitcher, who was optioned to the Class A Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday, was shot twice in the chest and once in the right arm shortly after 3 a.m., according to a police report.

Bierbrodt remained in serious condition at the Medical University of South Carolina, a spokesman said. No arrests have been made yet.
