Revenge Park

The new Fairmount Park Commission has barely had time to get their seats warm. Still, the commission will now have to referee yet another messy Philadelphia political fight.

This fight card features former Congressman Tom Foglietta vs. long-time rival State Sen. Vince Fumo and a group of Korean war veterans. The veterans recently unveiled a new Penn's Landing memorial in honor of those who died in the Korean conflict. One problem: They want the plaza where the memorial is located renamed from Foglietta Plaza to Korean War Memorial Plaza. Fumo is backing their request to the park commission.

Foglietta, who lobbied to have the plaza named after his father, Michael, isn't pleased. We wouldn't be either, especially since revenge seems to be motivating some of the veterans who are angry that Foglietta didn't raise money for the memorial as promised.

Normally, renaming rights go to the highest corporate bidder. Since neither side qualifies, we suggest the commission stick to its original plan and the Foglietta name. *
