Letters Cheers For Convention Center Editorial

Posted: July 10, 2002

THE DAILY NEWS gets it! Your editorial of June 28 on the labor situation at the Convention Center was right on target.

In the past, only the politics of the unions has been dealt with. The business of the Convention Center was a secondary consideration. That meant that the interests of the customers at the center placed a distant second to the interest of the politics of the unions.

Only by heeding your advice will our customers accept change as meaningful and return to the center: "We urge Harrisburg to approve the appropriation and then hold the money hostage until the changes (i.e. the recommendations of the Econsult report to improve the labor conditions) are made. Period. No negotiation."

There are circumstances where compromise is not available. This is one of them. I applaud the Daily News for recognizing it.

In praise of Deidre Farmbry

As a person who is with Deidre Farmbry on a daily basis, I see a decent lady, wife, mother and daughter who wishes nothing but the very best education for all children because they deserve it.

Dr. Farmbry's resignation is a tragedy for all schoolchildren. Parents, it is up to us to keep the family unit strong. Listen to your children. They are our future.

Time to push hate-crimes law

We are greatly disappointed that the Local Law Enforcement Enchancement Act recently suffered a serious setback in the U.S. Senate.

As a result, passage of this long-awaited hate-crimes legislation, which would enable the Justice Department to assist with local prosecutions or intervene in cases where violence occurs on the basis of a victim's race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability, will be delayed yet again.

Sen. Specter has been extremely supportive of this important legislation, serving as co-sponsor. Regretfully, Sen. Specter voted against the cloture motion, which delayed passage of the act.

This is the time for hate-crime legislation to be a priority of lawmakers. We know all too well where bigotry and hatred can lead. In the wake of Sept. 11, Arab and Muslim-Americans have faced assults and harassment, and anti-Semitic incidents and attitudes are on the rise.

It is with a deep sense of urgency that we encourage all caring citizens to voice their support for this measure.
