Barrage to work out

Posted: May 08, 2004

The Philadelphia Barrage, the area's new professional field lacrosse team, will practice at Villanova Stadium from 12:15 to 4 this afternoon.

The practice will include a scrimmage against the MAB Paints-Philadelphia men's lacrosse team, beginning at 2 p.m.

Players will be available to sign autographs and meet with fans after the scrimmage.

The practice is open and free to the public.

The Barrage, who have relocated from Bridgeport, Conn., will open the Major League Lacrosse season against the New Jersey Pride at Villanova Stadium on May 22.

For ticket information, call the Barrage at 888-450-7802.

Bergey claimed. The Barrage announced on Thursday that they had claimed attackman Josh Bergey, brother of Philadelphia Wings star Jake Bergey, from the MLL waiver wire. He is slated to take part in this afternoon's practice.

Bergey had spent two weeks with the Boston Cannons before being released on Wednesday. The Chadds Ford native played college lacrosse at Salisbury University, where he helped the Seagulls win the 2003 Division III national championship. Bergey led Salisbury in scoring in 2003 with 120 points (72 goals, 48 assists) and started all 20 games. He also plays indoor lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League and was the top draft choice of the Toronto Rock last year.

The Bergey brothers, sons of former Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey, share third place among Salisbury's all-time career scoring leaders with 237 points each.

Showing off. Major League Lacrosse will stage its annual skills competition at Villanova Stadium on July 15.

The competition will take place at halftime of a game between the Barrage and the Long Island Lizards.

Contestants will vie for honors in fastest shot, most accurate shot and freestyle shot, in which six of the league's top players will display their best breakaway moves against three of the league's best goalies.

The game and the skills competition will be telecast on ESPN2.
