TRENTON — Mitch Jones, Aaron Rifkin and Bronson Sardinha each hit home runs yesterday afternoon to help the Trenton Thunder defeat the Portland Sea Dogs, 11-2, in the Eastern League.

Jones slammed his 23d home run of the season and now has home runs in four consecutive games, one shy of the Trenton franchise record. His three-run homer in the sixth gave the Thunder (41-43) an 8-2 lead.

Trenton has 84 homers, third highest in the league.

Earlier in the day, Stump Merrill of Trenton was named manager of the North Division in the league's all-star game to be held on Wednesday at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.

Merrill replaces Binghamton Mets manager Ken Oberkfell, who is set to be a coach in the minor-league Futures Game on Sunday in Houston as part of baseball's all-star festivities.
