Hawks' top shooter returns to practice

Posted: November 27, 2004

St. Joseph's guard Pat Carroll, the team's top returning scorer, practiced yesterday for the first time since dislocating his right shoulder during a practice session on Oct. 26 and was listed as possible for the Hawks' game today against Davidson at the Palestra.

His participation will be a game-time decision.

Carroll, a 6-foot-5 senior lefthander who is among the top three-point shooters in the country, was cleared to practice after a reevaluation by team orthopedist Michael Ciccotti.

Carroll and Dave Mallon, a 6-10 junior, sat out the Hawks' opening-night 91-51 loss at Kansas on Tuesday. Mallon is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot and will not play against Davidson.

Carroll, who averaged 10.1 points a game last season, led the Atlantic Ten Conference in three-point shooting percentage (45.8) for the second straight year and was ranked No. 6 in the nation. He had started 62 straight games before suffering the injury.

Davidson (2-1) is coming off Wednesday's 103-33 victory over Maine-Farmington. The Wildcats, a preseason choice to win the Southern Conference, opened the season with an 84-81 win at Missouri. Their lone loss came against Duke, 74-61.

Davidson is led by 6-5 junior Brendan Winters, a first-team all-conference selection who is averaging 20.0 points and 7.0 rebounds a game.
