The death of an 11-month-old Middletown Township girl last week was a homicide, said a statement released yesterday by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office.
The infant, identified as Sophia Hughes, died Friday at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia of head trauma, a spokeswoman for the office said. Officials said the incident was likely due to shaken baby syndrome, caused by vigorous shaking of an infant or young child by the arms, legs, chest or shoulders.
Middletown police and Bucks County District Attorney Diane Gibbons refused to comment on the case yesterday or release the names of the baby's parents.
