Cincinnati and Charlotte falter in Conference USA

Terrence Leather scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half, and South Florida upset No. 21 Cincinnati, 80-68, last night in the Conference USA tournament quarterfinals in Memphis.

The 11th-seeded Bulls (14-15) will play Memphis, an 83-69 upset winner over No. 25 Charlotte, in today's semifinals.

The Bearcats (24-7) led by 50-46 on a jumper by Armein Kirkland when the Bulls got going and scored the next 11 points, including eight from Leather.

Rodney Carney scored 20 points to lead Memphis (18-14) to an 83-69 victory over Charlotte (21-7), which got 32 points from Curtis Withers but made just eight second-half field goals.

Larry O'Bannon scored 18 points to lead five Louisville players in double figures, and the sixth-ranked Cardinals (27-4) never trailed in an 85-61 victory over Texas Christian (19-13).

Louisville's semifinal opponent will be Alabama-Birmingham (21-9), which rallied to beat DePaul (19-10) by 59-56 on Demario Eddins' three-pointer from the left corner with 8 seconds left.

Atlantic Coast Conference - Shawan Robinson made six three-pointers and scored 24 points, leading Clemson (16-14) over defending tournament champion Maryland (16-12) in the opening round of the ACC tournament in Washington.

Clemson faces second-ranked North Carolina today.

Ilian Evtimov had five three-pointers in the first half and scored 18 points, helping North Carolina State (18-12) win a quarterfinals date with Wake Forest with a 70-54 whipping of Florida State (12-19).

Wake will be without Chris Paul, who is suspended because he punched N.C. State's Julius Hodge in the groin on Sunday.

J.R. Reynolds scored a career-high 32 points, leading Virginia (14-14) to a 66-65 victory over Miami (16-12) and into the quarterfinals, where the Cavaliers will face Duke.

Big Ten Conference - Coach Gene Keady's 25-year career at Purdue (7-21) came to a disappointing end, with Iowa (20-10) beating the Boilermakers, 71-52, in Chicago and ousting them from the Big Ten tournament.

The Hawkeyes, who play No. 13 Michigan State in today's quarterfinals, opened with a barrage of three-pointers, racing out to a 12-2 lead from which Purdue never recovered. The game was effectively over at halftime.

Mohamed Hachad scored 17 points and T.J. Parker keyed a 12-0 second-half run and made three free throws in the final eight seconds to lead Northwestern (15-15) to a 58-56 win over Michigan (13-18). The Wildcats next play top-ranked Illinois.
