Parent charged with attack at school

A parent was arrested yesterday after a verbal altercation with a school employee turned violent, Philadelphia police said.

Police said the man, whom they did not identify, punched a maintenance employee at the Henry Edmunds School at 1197 Haworth St. in Frankford.

Vincent Thompson, a school district spokesman, said a maintenance employee had closed the doors at the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school around 9:30 a.m.

The parent apparently was trying to enter the school and knocked on the door, but the employee didn't hear him, Thompson said. A nonteaching assistant opened the door and let the parent in. According to the maintenance worker, the parent then found him and beat him, Thompson said. The employee received stitches on his face at a local hospital and was released, Thompson said. The parent was arrested on assault charges.

"The School District of Philadelphia does not tolerate violence against any of our employees and students. . . . The district will support prosecution to the fullest extent of the law," Thompson said.
