Letters A Person Is A Person Right From The Start

Posted: April 13, 2005

NO MATTER how many times Carol Towarnicky (April 12) and others dismiss it as a mere "religious belief," the idea that a person's life begins at fertilization is a scientific fact supported by secular textbooks on biology and human development.

Once a sperm fertilizes an ovum, there is no mystery third component thrown in at implantation or at any other time that magically "turns" a non-person into a person. Lungs and hearts and arms and legs are not "added" to an embyro like you will with a Mr. Potato Head doll. They develop from the DNA already in place at fertilization.

To argue that killing zygotes and embryos is no big deal just because many die of natural causes is absurd. Most born people die of natural causes, too. That doesn't mean we should be allowed to kill one another.

Fighting Fire Dept. closings

Firefighters Local 22 is extremely proud of the neighbors getting together and fighting this unsafe Fire Department deployment plan. The only way we can get this mayor to listen is with the public's support.

The money is a very small amount of the city budget. Right now we have a bill (HB 855) in the state Legislature to force the administrations to do an impact study before they do wholesale cuts of your protection.

Bravo on SEPTA editorial

Thank you for your right-to-the-point April 8 editorial concerning the ongoing negotiations between TWU Local 234 and SEPTA.

I hope these concerns will sink into both parties' heads before Friday.

Get the facts on shootings

It was good to see you reporting that the shooter did not have a license to carry a gun in the Wawa shootings.

It should be reported about every shooting in the city if the perpetrator does or does not have a license to carry a gun or if the gun is registered to him. This way we will get real facts, analyze them and use them to curb gun shootings done by the criminals.
