Police: Man shot dead by best friend

Posted: August 12, 2005

A 20-year-old Northeast Philadelphia man was shot to death yesterday by his best friend after the man said, "I'm sorry to do this," pointed the gun at his friend's chest, and pulled the trigger, the victim's family and police said.

The victim, whom a family member identified as Zhilwan Rasheed, was asleep on a couch in his family's living room when his friend descended from an upstairs bedroom about 2 p.m. The friend then pointed a small-caliber handgun at Rasheed and fired once.

Police Lt. Michael Morrin said there was no evidence of an altercation at the home in the 1000 block of Chesworth Road in the Bustleton section.

"He was just waiting right there in the living room until police arrived," Morrin said.

The friend, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Police Headquarters, where he was to be charged with murder and other offenses.

Rasheed, a furniture-store delivery driver, was taken to Frankford Hospital-Torresdale Campus, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m.
