Gonzaga holds off Idaho, 69-60

J.P. Batista scored 23 points, including three straight baskets with the game on the line, and No. 9 Gonzaga beat stubborn Idaho, 69-60, last night in the season opener for both teams in Spokane, Wash.

Elsewhere: In Boston, Craig Smith had 22 points and nine rebounds as No. 11 Boston College beat Dartmouth, 80-61, in its first game as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. . . . Taurean Green had 23 points and keyed a late second-half run to lead Florida over No. 16 Syracuse, 75-70, in the championship game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in New York. . . . Dee Brown scored 19 points to power No. 17 Illinois (1-0) to a 90-65 win over South Dakota State (1-2) in Champaign, Ill. . . . Justin Gray hit a jumper to force a second overtime and then scored four of his 18 points in the extra session to lift No. 19 Wake Forest (3-1) to a 78-73 victory over Texas Tech (2-2) in the consolation game of the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic in New York. . . . West Chester 74, St. Leo's 69 - Donnell Butler scored 14 points to lead the Golden Rams (2-0) past visiting St. Leo (2-1).

Delaware 77, The Citadel 57 - Zaire Taylor made all eight shots and scored 22 points in his college debut, Rulon Washington added 16 and Delaware (1-0) held The Citadel (0-1) to 27 percent shooting in a victory in the Hispanic College Fund Classic in Raleigh, N.C.

Bucknell 56, Rider 54 - Kevin Bettencourt hit a jump shot with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Bucknell a 55-54 lead over Rider, then added a free throw after Rider turned over the inbounds pass to clinch the victory for the Bison in the season opener for both teams in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Lincoln 72, Kings 69 - Sami Wilie scored 22 points and Thomas Hickson scored 21 and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Lions (1-0) beat the Monarchs (0-1) in a game at Elizabethtown College.


Duke 93, Penn State 67 - Freshman Abby Waner scored 15 points, Alison Bales added 15 points and nine rebounds, and No. 1 Duke (1-0) used its stifling defense to pull away in the second half of a rout of Penn State (0-1) in State College, Pa.

Baylor 93, UCLA 85 - Sophia Young scored 26 points and Angela Tisdale added 23 to lead No. 6 Baylor (2-0) to a win over UCLA (1-0) in Waco, Texas.
