Juan Gonzalez signs with Ducks

The Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League yesterday announced the signing of former American League MVP Juan Gonzalez. The slugger will join the Ducks on Tuesday.

Gonzalez, 36, hit 434 homers and drove in 1,404 runs in a 16-year career with the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals.

Long Island will play in Camden on June 9-11 and in Atlantic City on Aug. 25-28.

Roger Clemens of the Houston Astros went through his first workout at a minor-league stadium in Lexington, Ky. His son, Koby Clemens, hit a ball off a scoreboard on the left-field wall.

The New York Yankees placed outfielder Gary Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list for the second time in less than a month with an injured left wrist.

Bartolo Colon of the Los Angeles Angels pitched four shutout innings for single-A Rancho Cucamonga in a rehab start.

Scott Sauerbeck of the Cleveland Indians pleaded not guilty Thursdayto charges he and a woman fled the pitcher's car after police said the vehicle had been weaving. The player did not appear in Avon Lake Municipal Court, about 30 miles from Cleveland, and his attorney faxed a plea.
