Best Find: Swarthmore Co-op

Posted: June 25, 2006

What it is: Swarthmore Co-op, one of the oldest cooperative grocery stores in the country, offers locally grown produce and organic and natural foods, as well as fresh meats, prepared meals and bakery items. You don't have to be a member to shop there.

What we like: It's a friendly, community-oriented store that deals with a lot of local suppliers for everything from fresh strawberries to raspberry jelly rolls. And if a customer really wants a certain item, general manager Jack Cavanaugh will try to stock it.

The co-op gets some of its produce from Linvilla Orchards in Middletown and Pete's Produce in Westtown. It carries Nature's Yoke free-range eggs ($2.29) and Natural by Nature grass-fed, fat-free milk ($3.49 a half-gallon). It has a nice selection of yogurt and cheeses, including raw-milk creamy blue cheese ($15.99 a pound) from Harmonyville Artisan Cheese in Pottstown.

For the beef connoisseur, there's dried, aged beef that chef John Wilson describes as "addictive" with its tender, rich, complex flavor. It's $14.95 for New York strip or rib eye.

Wilson offers up some tempting prepared meals that include meatloaf ($5.99), stuffed chicken breast ($9.99), and stuffed salmon with spinach, pine nuts and feta cheese ($12.99). Salads, such as Jenni's chicken salad with crunchy celery and juicy red grapes ($7.99 a pound), are great for picnics.

For the sweet tooth, there are Chilly Philly ice cream and baked goods from Vanilla Beans, a Swarthmore operation.

What else: The co-op, which has outdoor seating, fires up the grill from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on weekends and offers specialty sausages, grilled chicken, cheeseburgers and hot dogs.

Membership is $300 and includes member specials, member appreciation days (10 percent off everything four or five times a year), and member events.
