With Feagles ailing, Giants sign Landeta

The New York Giants signed 44-year-old punter Sean Landeta as insurance yesterday because they are uncertain whether a knee injury will keep Jeff Feagles from playing in today's NFC East showdown with Dallas.

Landeta played on both of the Giants' Super Bowl championship teams under Bill Parcells, who now coaches the Cowboys. He and Feagles also played for the Eagles.

The San Diego Chargers officially transferred star linebacker Shawne Merriman to the team's active roster. Suspended for the last four games for a violation of the NFL's steroids and related substances policy, Merriman will rejoin the starting lineup today.

The Chargers waived linebacker Akbar Gbaja-Biamila.

Elsewhere: New York Jets wide receiver Tim Dwight was placed on injured reserve because of a foot injury. . . . The Washington Redskins signed kicker Shaun Suisham from the practice squad.

Colleges

Sophomore Eric Avila scored the deciding goal on UC-Santa Barbara's fifth penalty kick, and the unseeded Gauchos beat Wake Forest, 4-3, in the tiebreaker in St. Louis to reach the finals of the NCAA men's soccer tournament.

Santa Barbara (17-7-0) will face UCLA (14-5-1) today.

Non-scholarship freshman David Estrada scored twice in 67 seconds for UCLA in a 4-0 upset of Virginia in the first semifinal.

The University of South Carolina's board of trustees approved a revised contract for Steve Spurrier that increases the football coach's yearly salary to $1.75 million, up from his current package of about $1.25 million. Spurrier's contract was extended through 2012.

Elsewhere: Nicole Hester, a junior forward on the Drexel women's basketball team, will be out indefinitely due to illness.

Golf

Jim Furyk shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a 3-shot lead into the final round of the Nedbank Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa.

Lisa Strom Fernandes shot a 69 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., to make the cut in the LPGA Tour's final qualifying tournament.

The Lansdale Catholic graduate will join the 70-player field in today's final. The top 15 players will earn exempt status for the 2007 LPGA Tour.

Former caddie Michael Boyd shot a 6-under 66 on the Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., to share the lead in the PGA Tour's final qualifying tournament. Boyd shared the top spot with Rich Barcelo at 14-under 274, with two rounds left in the six-day tournament. Barcelo shot a 69.

The top 30 and ties after tomorrow's final round will earn PGA Tour cards for next year.
