Miami Heat coach Pat Riley underwent surgery yesterday to remove three large pieces of cartilage from his right knee.

The Heat called the 60-minute surgery "successful" in a statement and said Riley, 61, was resting at home. No timetable has been set for his return to the sidelines, the team said.

Riley took an indefinite leave of absence from the Heat to have knee and hip surgery. The hip procedure will be done at a future date.

Assistant Ron Rothstein is coaching the team in Riley's absence.
