Phils reliever Castro gets a win

Phillies reliever Fabio Castro held Puerto Rico to two hits in five innings last night to lead the unbeaten Dominican Republic to a 12-0 rout in the Caribbean Series in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Castro struck out four and walked three for the win.

Miguel Tejada had two RBIs and Anderson Hernandez scored three runs to lead the Dominican Republic's Cibao Eagles (3-0) to victory.

Tejada, the Baltimore Orioles' star shortstop, went 2 for 3. Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz had three RBIs, and Hernandez, a speedy New York Mets prospect, went 4 for 5.

The Carolina Giants (2-1) suffered their first loss in the tournament. In yesterday's early game, Oscar Salazar homered and had five RBIs to lead Venezuela to a 13-3 victory over Mexico.

Tennis

Marcos Baghdatis won his second career title by beating defending champion Ivan Ljubicic, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4, at the Zagreb Open in Croatia.

Justine Henin will not play for Belgium in the Fed Cup against the United States because of a heavy schedule.

Belgium's Kim Clijsters also will not compete because she needs time to plan for her wedding later this year.

The United States and Belgium will play the first round on April 21-22 in Delray Beach, Fla.

Peru's Luis Horna won the MoviStar Open in Vina del Mar, Chile, for his second ATP Tour title, beating hometown favorite Nicolas Massu, 7-5, 6-3.

Horse Racing

A record 450 horses have been nominated for the 2007 Triple Crown races, including 2-year-old champions Street Sense and Dreaming of Anna and 32 nominees from trainer Todd Pletcher.

The previous record for early nominations, which carries a $600 fee to be eligible for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, was 446 set in 2003.

Soccer

Manchester United kept its six-point lead in the English Premier League by beating Tottenham, 4-0, playing the final minutes without goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who suffered a broken nose.

The Red Devils ended the game with 10 men and midfielder John O'Shea in goal after Van der Sar was kneed in the face by Tottenham striker Robbie Keane.

Stadiums with inadequate security should be banned from hosting games next season, the Italian Olympic Committee said after the death of a police officer in rioting at a Serie A match.

Authorities said 29 people were arrested, while preliminary autopsy results showed the officer might not have been killed by an explosive device as believed.
