Phila. Park is ready to run

Posted: March 20, 2007

Track superintendent Roy Smith said yesterday that Philadelphia Park would resume live racing this afternoon following three canceled programs caused by Friday's ice and snow storm.

"The surface is smooth and uniform, and it will be open for training [this morning]," Smith said. "I would guess the track would be listed as something like "good" by the afternoon [races]."

Philadelphia Park announced its stakes schedule, which includes the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (Grade II) and the $125,000 Smarty Jones Classic.

The Pennsylvania Derby, scheduled for Sept. 3, was not run last year due to construction on the slots casino at the track, and carried a $750,000 purse in 2005.

The Smarty Jones, named for the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner trained locally by John Servis, replaces the Iroquois Handicap and is slated for Pennsylvania-breds on July 28.
