Road to the Kentucky Derby

Posted: March 22, 2007

Hard Spun drew Post 10 and was made the 5-2 favorite in Saturday's $500,000 Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. "I'm not really concerned about the outside post as long as the track isn't showing a bias," trainer Larry Jones said yesterday. "At Turfway, with the synthetic track, it appears that post position is not that important."

Chelokee, trained by Michael Matz, will not run in the Lane's End and is expected to run in the $1 million Florida Derby on March 31. Ravel has been declared off the Derby trail because of an injury to his left front cannon bone. The Todd Pletcher trainee won last month's Sham Stakes and was expected to run in the Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 7.

Saturday at Turfway Park, Race 10, post 5:45 p.m. ESPN (5-6 p.m.) Grade II, 11/8 miles. All-weather track. All carry 121 pounds.
