Five of the six Philadelphia-area retail chains that reported sales for April or for the first quarter said results were down from a year ago. The percentages below refer to stores that were open at least a year, a key industry gauge.
Mothers Work Inc., Philadelphia: Same-store sales for April fell 15 percent from a year earlier. The company blamed colder-than-anticipated weather for dampening sales at its 1,412 locations.
The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., York: Comparable-store sales in April fell 16 percent from last year. Its Carson's stores separately fell 12 percent. Bon-Ton mostly blamed the weather, too.
