"There's so much raw talent here. They're so enthusiastic," said Marge Triplo, director and theater teacher at Lindenwold. "It's a nice blend and they support each other. I feel very lucky to be here."
The Critics and Awards Program was founded eight years ago in Washington D.C. to recognize high school theater and journalism students. They are now held in 16 cities in the United States and Canada. The 135 journalism students in the program wrote a total of 785 reviews after watching five of the 29 shows put on by local schools. Reviews of local schools' shows and reviews written by local students were published in Neighbors.
The second annual awards ceremony for the greater Philadelphia region was held last Sunday at the Upper Darby High School Performing Arts Center.
Maya Tolbert, who developed the choreography for Narnia with fellow student Turquoise Wilson, attended the ceremony.
"At first, we didn't expect to win," said Tolbert, 17. "I was excited just to be nominated, but when I found out we won, my heart jumped. It was a great experience."
