Phils' top pick will be on tube at CWS

Posted: June 15, 2007

It's not often the Philadelphia Daily News touts a Rice University baseball game, but this is what happens when a Phillies first-round pick is involved.

Rice star Joe Savery will take the mound on Sunday as the Owls play in the College World Series. Savery, selected by the Phillies a week ago with the 19th overall pick, will face either Mississippi State or Louisville.

Rice opens play today against Louisville at 2 p.m. on ESPN2. If Rice wins today, the Owls will play at 7 p.m. on Sunday on ESPN2. If the Owls lose, they will play at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.

Savery leads the team in hitting at .360 and plays first base when he's not on the mound. As a pitcher, Savery is 10-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 17 starts.

He is one of four finalists for the Dick Howser Award given to college baseball's top player. Florida State second baseman Tony Thomas Jr., Texas outfielder Kyle Russell and Vanderbilt pitcher David Price are the other finalists. The winner will be announced today. *
