Internships have become a gateway to permanent jobs, and the Web helps employers craft internships while telling prospective interns how to get the edge for the internships they want.

Offer internships. Businesses considering an internship program might start with the simple guide posted here by Indiana University. The how-to publication says internships boost a company's recruiting image, and provide a way of screening and grooming prospective employees.

Government jobs. Students in high school, college or graduate school can search for temporary jobs, career experience or summer work in agencies that include the World Bank, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the CIA, and others, many of which run special training programs for students.

Vault picks. The long Web address reaches the internship postings at the Vault career site. Vault has a big library of company research, educational advice and job descriptions. Its bulletin boards dish company gossip, and the video-resume competitions have lifted the genre to music-video production levels.

Jersey intern. Employers are invited to use this site to help them set up and offer internships in New Jersey. Its operators say they have 3,000 internship listings in 80 career categories.

Internships abroad. A student-written article here on finding business internships abroad - as opposed to nonprofit volunteer work, teaching English, being a nanny, and the like - recommends some basic, but potentially scary "tricks of job hunting: cold calling and networking." The site has extensive links for such adventures as farming and hotel work in Britain, or engineering and technology gigs in Germany, Argentina, Russia, Spain and Switzerland.
