Three killed in crash on I-95 in Tacony

Posted: June 21, 2007

Three people were killed in a two-car accident on I-95 in Tacony last night, halting traffic on the busy interstate in both directions.

Police said the driver of a car traveling northbound shortly before 8 p.m. lost control of the vehicle near the Cottman Avenue exit. The car hit the guardrail and flipped over, ejecting both occupants, a man and a woman.

The man landed on the highway; the woman landed on State Road, which runs parallel to I-95. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Their names were not released.

The airborne vehicle landed on a second car. The driver of that vehicle, a man whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital, police said.

Traffic was stopped in both directions while police cleared the scene and investigators tried to determine what had happened.

The southbound lanes were opened after half an hour. Police opened the northbound lanes shortly after 10 p.m.
