Pinot blanc is the lesser-known sister of the pinot clan, except in Alsace, where it takes on intriguing guises in exotic, off-dry whites.

This well-priced California rendition from Valley of the Moon is a fine introduction to the grape, with a crisp fragrance of pear and lime, a twinge of anise spice, and a buttery-nut finish that lends it richness to pair with a wide variety of foods. It's also discounted by $6 in the state of Pennsylvania.

Valley of the Moon pinot blanc costs $9.99 at selected Pennsylvania State Stores.
