N. Wales man arrested in string of store robberies

Philadelphia police have arrested and charged a 35-year-old North Wales man in a series of armed robberies at convenience stores over the last two months.

A tip following publicity about the case led police to Larue Yusef Smith, who was picked up Monday at his home. Police accused him of 11 holdups at 7-Eleven stores in Philadelphia and one in Lower Merion Township.

In one of the predawn robberies, Smith's gun was fired, apparently by accident, as he put it back in his pocket. The stickup was caught on surveillance cameras. "He is pretty clumsy," said Detective Kevin McShea of the Northwest Detective Division.

The robberies netted mostly small amounts. On July 2, the take was $250 from a Ridge Avenue store, McShea said. No one was injured in the robberies. Police also recovered the handgun and car that they say Smith used in the holdups. - Lini S. Kadaba
