The discovery of an old mortar shell in a shed prompted police to evacuate a North Philadelphia street for about two hours yesterday, police said.
The man who found the shell, on the 2500 block of North Hope Street in the Fairhill section, carried it to the curb about 9:40 a.m. and called police.
Bomb Squad officers could not determine with an X-ray whether the projectile was live.
Police moved the 30-inch shell to the bomb range at the Police Academy in Upper Holmesburg for disposal, officials said. The shell appeared to be older military ordnance, police said. - Joseph A. Gambardello
