Not a bad start for McNabb

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Crunch Time is a daily compilation of hits and misses from Eagles training camp:

Midseason form it wasn't, but Donovan McNabb looked reasonably mobile on the first day of full-squad workouts with pads at Lehigh.

There were a few times when No. 5 didn't seem to plant solidly on his braced right knee, and passes floated. But there were many other times when the ball flew like a guided missile. Perhaps most reassuringly, McNabb scrambled away from the rush, stopped as he neared the line of scrimmage, and hit Hank Baskett down the right sideline - exactly the kind of stop-and-start test McNabb must pass as he returns from ACL surgery.

"It's going to be a slow process, but there were no worries in my mind of coming out and being nervous or anything like that," McNabb said between practice sessions. "It was just playing football. I've done it before. It's kind of like riding a bike."

Other highlights from the long-awaited first day of live action, which drew a large, supportive crowd to Lehigh's Goodman campus:

* Chris Gocong really smothered Jason Davis on a screen, just shut him down before he could turn upfield.

* In case you missed last week's Sports Illustrated cover, Sheldon Brown reenacted his hit on Reggie Bush from last season's playoffs, Brown blasting Hank Baskett after a short catch. The crowd of 12,432 was suitably awed.

* Ryan Moats mishandled a Kevin Kolb pass, volleying it to Omar Gaither, who made a diving pick.

* Rookie safety C.J. Gaddis blitzed and blew up an inside draw to Brian Westbrook.

* Westbrook then found a nice seam up the middle after William Thomas bulldozed Matt McCoy.

* Mike Patterson knocked the ball free as Donovan McNabb cocked his arm; Patterson said he accidentally brushed McNabb with his shoulder pad.

Quote of note

"I expect him to have a breakout year this year. For those that have kind of turned their back on him, they'll be sorry . . . To come off that corner, you see 93, it's a scary feeling, believe me." - Donovan McNabb, when asked about his offseason knee- rehab partner, Jevon Kearse. *
