Socialist Workers Party fields mayoral candidate

Posted: August 03, 2007

A third candidate for Philadelphia mayor is expected to appear on the Nov. 6 ballot.

John Staggs, a member of the Socialist Workers Party, submitted nearly 4,000 signatures Wednesday, the deadline for filing nomination papers. Staggs, 60, of Germantown, works at a Montgomery County meatpacking plant.

He has campaigned for office before as a Socialist Workers Party member, most recently winning 571 votes in a failed bid last year to oust State Rep. Rosita C. Youngblood, who received more than 15,000 votes.

Staggs also ran for mayor in 2003, and for City Council in 1995.- Marcia Gelbart
