Lynx earn a shutout

OTTAWA, Ontario - Three former Phillies combined for a shutout as the Ottawa Lynx beat the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-0, last night in the International League.

J.A. Happ struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings for the win. Mike Zagurski went 1 1/3 innings and Yoel Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth.

Reading 6, Binghamton 5

READING - Michael Garciaparra singled with the bases loaded in the ninth to drive in the tying and winning runs as the Phillies beat the Mets in the Eastern League.

Binghamton's Brett Harper had silenced the crowd in the top of the inning with a two-out, one-on homer to give the Mets the lead. Harper ripped the first pitch from reliever Julio Mateo for his 16th homer.

It was the first Reading appearance for Mateo (1-0), who had come from Seattle on Tuesday in the trade that sent Reading's Jesus Merchan to the Mariners.

Bowie 8, Trenton 7

TRENTON - A three-run homer by Luis Montanez capped an eight-run first inning and the Baysox held on to defeat the Thunder in the Eastern League.

Trenton scored six times in the fifth, including a three-run homer by Matt Carson.

Lakewood 7, Kannapolis 4

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Antonio Bastardo struck out five in seven innings to lead the BlueClaws in the South Atlantic League.

Camden 11, Lancaster 3

LANCASTER - Brad Strauss drove in three runs to lead the Riversharks past the Barnstormers in the Atlantic League.

Atlantic City 8, Grays 1

ATLANTIC CITY - Rob Fischer drove in four runs to lead the Surf past the Grays in the Can-Am League.
