Bag prompts evacuation, closing of Broad Street

Posted: August 07, 2007

A hefty leather bag left on a Center City sidewalk yesterday morning prompted the evacuation of the School District of Philadelphia's administration building and the closing of a stretch of North Broad Street.

The bag apparently was left behind by a weary woman, according to videotape from a security camera. Police blocked off Broad Street to vehicles and pedestrians between Spring Garden and Callowhill Streets. The police bomb squad blew up the bag about 8:30 a.m.

Following their policy, police declined to say whether the bag contained explosives or the discarded possessions of a passerby. One observer said he heard a bomb squad member remark the bag contained only "a bunch of crap." By 9 a.m., school district workers were allowed back inside and Broad Street was reopened. - Peter Mucha
