Car thefts elevate Lower Merion police presence

Posted: August 07, 2007

Lower Merion Township is increasing police patrols and urging residents to report any suspicious activity after two similar armed carjackings within five days. There have been no arrests and no reported injuries.

The first was Wednesday at the Wyndon Apartments on the 600 block of East Lancaster Avenue in Wynnewood, the second about 11 p.m. Sunday outside a home on Cynwyd Circle in Bala Cynwyd. During both, witnesses told police that two young males - one armed with a silver-plated handgun - approached their victims, demanded keys to their vehicles, and stated, "Don't make me hurt you," according to Township Supervisors Chairman Bruce Reed.

Reed alerted Lower Merion residents to the incidents through an e-mail he sent yesterday morning. The vehicles taken were a BMW station wagon and an Infiniti SUV.

"This is a gun being brandished in a neighborhood," Reed said in an interview yesterday. "It's the sort of thing that gets our full attention." - Diane Mastrull
