HOUSTON - Philadelphia's only chance to have a member on the United States boxing team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics took a serious hit last night.

Light welterweight Danny Garcia was stopped by Jeremy Bryan, of Clifton, N.J. in a first-round bout at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team Trials in the George R. Brown Convention Center. Bryan outscored Garcia 23-14 in the four-round bout.

Garcia, 19, who was the national champion in the ligthweight division last year, is still alive in the double-elimination tournament. He will fight Samuel Martinez, of Jacksonville, N.C., tonight in a consolation bracket bout.

There are eight boxers in each of the the 11-weight classes. Division winners will advance to the World Championships, which will be held later this year in Chicago.

Garcia will graduate in December from Accelerated Learning Academy, after transferring from George Washington High School. *
